Performance of the Greek Theater of Geneva on 2 & 3 October in Patras

PATRAS

INFO

The Hellenic Theatre of Geneva will tour Greece in early October 2022, with five performances of the play Ioannis Kapodistrias, Glory and Solitude. This is an original theatrical work, which was written on the occasion of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution and highlights, among other things, the unbreakable historical ties of friendship between Greece and Switzerland. It has already been presented eight times in Switzerland (Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg).

The author and director of the historical play is Ioanna Papandropoulou Berthoud, Professor at the University of Geneva and Honorary Doctorate of the University of Patras. The aim of the author, who has been an active member of the Geneva Greek Theatre for many years, was to highlight the role of Kapodistrias in European diplomacy in the 19th century, his action for the independence and lasting neutrality of Switzerland, as well as his effective contribution to the Greek struggle against the Ottoman yoke and the subsequent re-establishment of the Greek state. The work is the result of detailed research and dramatic editing on historical sources: letters, autobiographies, poetic embolisms of Dionysios Solomos’ Hymn to Freedom, authentic conversations between Kapodistrias and personalities such as Tsar Alexander I, Princess Roxandra Sturza, Metternich, Theodoros Kolokotronis, the philhellenic Swiss banker John Gabriel Eynard, etc. Consequently, the play is intercultural and bilingual, while in the parts where there are French dialogues, they are accompanied by simultaneous translation and projection in subtitles in Greek.

The tour of the Theatre of the Hellenes of Geneva in Greece starts on 1 October 2022 from Corfu, birthplace of Kapodistrias, will continue with two performances in Patras on 2 and 3 October and will end after two performances in the capital at the Athens College Theatre on 5 and 6 October. The duration of the play is two hours (including a 20-minute intermission). Admission is free. More: www.theatregrec.ch
