Every year more than 10 million people worldwide are injured in the brain and about 2% of the population lives with the effects of CBI. The World Health Organization classifies keks as one of the leading causes of loss of productive years. For people under 40, keks are the leading cause of long-term disability and dependence in the health and social benefits system. The main causes of serious injuries in our country and in other countries of the Western world are traffic accidents and falls. The main causes of milder brain injuries, commonly called concussions, are sports injuries and violence. According to the results of Ken surveys 69% of people who survive moderate-severe KEK, experience significant disability several years after their injury. As stated by the coordinator of the research programs and director of the Ken professor Fofi Konstantinidou, ” our team at the neurocognitive Laboratory and the Center for Applied Neuroscience has been investigating Epidemiology, the effects of brain injuries on the Cypriot population for 10 years. In addition, we create therapeutic programs and examine their effectiveness in clinical trials. This coordinated effort is made in collaboration with various institutions, contributing to the international literature and the Cypriot society. Through our actions, dozens of people with CBI have been evaluated and have benefited from intervention programs through our clinical studies, thus filling a significant gap in the existing health system. This event is an important action for the interconnection of academic research with society. In addition, it is in line with Ken’s mission to contribute substantially, through our research, to policy-making to improve health and quality of life.» Co-organizers of the workshop are the Organization of State Health Services, the Department of social integration of people with disabilities of the Ministry of Labor, the Cyprus Stroke Association, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, the University of Kings College London and the EOKA fighters Melathron. The event is held within the framework of the brain-Rehab research programs (EXCELLENCE/1216/0411) and ACESO (EXCELLENCE/0918/0117) co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the research and Innovation Foundation.
