In the heart of Thessaloniki, in the historic area of Ano Ladadika, the Thessaloniki State Conservatory is housed in one of the city’s most important preserved buildings, at 15 Frangon Street. It is a place where history, architectural heritage, and contemporary cultural creation coexist, offering a unique setting for educational, artistic, and scholarly activities.

The building is an integral part of Thessaloniki’s history. It was erected in the mid-19th century as the residence of the English merchant Jeky Abbott, and in 1863 it passed into the ownership of the Imperial Ottoman Bank. After being destroyed by a bomb attack in 1903, it was rebuilt in 1904 to designs by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, and it remains to this day an emblematic example of the city’s architectural eclecticism.

Despite the severe damage it sustained during the great fire of 1917, it was preserved and restored, and in 1978 it was designated a protected monument of exceptional architectural value. Since 1987, it has housed the Thessaloniki State Conservatory, the only state-run music education institution in Greece.

In 2025, an extensive maintenance, restoration, and energy efficiency upgrade program was completed through the Recovery and Resilience Fund. The work ensured the preservation of the historic monument and the creation of modern infrastructure for educational, artistic, and cultural activities.

Today, the Thessaloniki State Conservatory serves as an open center for culture and knowledge. In addition to its educational mission, it hosts concerts, conferences, workshops, presentations, seminars, educational programs, and cultural outreach initiatives, actively contributing to the cultural life of Thessaloniki.
