The assignment of the 2023 XXXI International philosophy Olympiad in Greece / Ancient Olympia (11-14.5.2023), organized by the Department of Philosophy of the University, took place during the 27th International philosophy Olympiad in Rome in 2019. The Department of Philosophy organizes the Panhellenic Student Competition of philosophical essay since 2011 and supports the participation of the winners of the national competition in the International Olympiads of philosophy with the financial support of Elke and the rector of the University of Patras. This student philosophy competition was established on the initiative of the University of Patras (2010), under the auspices of which it is held, and is organized with the main responsibility of the Department of philosophy, with the official approval of the Ministry of culture and the collaboration of all the Universities of Greece, in cooperation with the Center for Greek Studies (Greece) of Harvard University, while it has secured the support of the Panhellenic Association of philologists. Since the first year of the competition, about 4,000 students from all over Greece have taken part in it. The two leading students qualify for participation in the International philosophy Olympiad, where respective missions from 60 countries compete for medals and distinctions. The IOF is a recognized sub-organization of the World Federation of philosophical societies and is under the auspices of UNESCO.
