2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture projects in April ELEFSINA INFO SATURDAY 1 APRIL Mystery 92 Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello Warehouse 1, Old Oil Mill Factory The contemporary music ensemble dissonArt performs Morton Feldman The distinguished music ensemble dissonArt presents, for the first time in Greece, the emblematic work of the pioneering American composer Morton Feldman Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello. An immersive listening experience, where the audience will be free to sit or lie down in Warehouse 1 of the Old Oil Mill Factory of Elefsina, in order to be close to the musicians and experience a unique performance. SATURDAY 8 APRIL – 3.33 p.m. Μystery 177 Visions from the Underworld – Finissage X-Bowling Art Center Closing of the contemporary art exhibition with the unveiling of the work by the much-awarded sculptor Theodoros Having hosted more than 2,000 visitors so far, the group exhibition of contemporary art closes with the unveiling of the “cube of the unknown”. During a special ceremony, under the direction of the artist McCloud Zicmuse, visitors will have the opportunity to see, for the first time and for one day only, the sculpture of the award-winning international Greek artist Theodoros. Earlier that day, from 11.00 to 13.00, Zicmuse will hold the workshop Preparing the Ways, aiming to prepare visitors for the procession that will follow, through techniques of playing hand-made instruments, singing exercises and simple choreographies. Visions from the Underworld, curated by Agprognostic Temple, is a symbolic passage to the Underworld and back, a journey of revelation and discovery through which 10 important contemporary artists demonstrate the relevance of the Eleusinian Mysteries to modern times and interpret them in a 21st century language. 21-23 APRIL Mystery 84 Panigíri (The Feast Day of Saint George) West Attica Labour Union Building (EKEDA) & Public space Free entrance Live Cinema – Working Class – Sirens This pioneering festival interacts with a religious, historical and cultural institution such as the Feast of St George (patron saint of the city), incorporating new features into the collective consciousness with all-day and all-night film screenings, six hours of public talks, VR performances and live filming in public space to create two films, in real time, which will be completed with the participation of the public, edited on site and screened at the end of the festival. A concept by director Syllas Tzoumerkas, co-curated by academic and cultural practitioner Maria Chatzichristodoulou aka Maria X, and film critic and programmer Lorenzo Esposito, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Film Festival and LADA – The Live Art Development Agency. SATURDAY 22 APRIL Mystery 100 The Sacred Songs Pontian Settlement Square & Oasis Former Campsite Free entrance Songs and dances of the Greek Easter Professor of Ethnomusicology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Lambros Liavas, will speak about the deeper meaning and functions of the folk events and songs of this time of the year when Christian worship revisits its ancient origins, Christ converses with Adonis and Ai-Giorgis meets the ancient dragon-killing hero who releases water and brings forth fruitfulness. Afterwards, a big folk feast will be held under the trees with the songs and dances of Earth, Spring and the Greek Easter. SUNDAY 30 APRIL Mystery 83 Spe Meliore Moriendi Old Railway Station Free entrance An intercultural synergy of visual arts, performance art and music Visual artist Marios Fournaris presents a cross-cultural synergy of visual arts, performance art and music in collaboration with the musicians Georgia Balabini and Mislav Režić, with the participation of various cultural groups of Elefsina. The project/action focuses on rethinking the characteristics that make up the whole of the ephemeral human existence, through a counterpoint of symbolic representations of the mythical world and the Renaissance. The artistic proposal comprises three parts: sculptural environment, performance, and music. THURSDAY APRIL 6, 20, 27 Cultterra Days of Thirst Old Railway Station The youth group Cultterra presents the action Thirstdays. The title is a pun on the English words “Thursday”, the day of the group’s weekly meeting, and “thirst”, signifying the city’s youth thirst for art and culture. The axes pass successively from the most informal events to the most formal and open to the public ones. In April, the activities that will take place are: γνωριmeet the 2023: Martha Frintzila, Araxovolin: film screening, to meet the locals: Elpida Hatzinikolaou. Educational and Training programmes April is a month rich in education and training programmes and actions for all school levels, young people and adults. Photographic works inspired by the city, short documentaries, murals inspired by the environment, a participatory urban design workshop, a dancing journey in public space with skateboards, a mixed group of teenagers designing the city of the future through digital environments, children of the first grade of primary school become familiar with new construction technologies, a university opens its doors to all interested parties to attend lectures, seminars and experiential workshops and many more activities and programmes take place in the city of Elefsina. Two iconic exhibitions will run through Sunday 23rd April at the Old Oil Mill Factory: Mystery 44 Heiner Goebbels 7 Columns, by the multi-talented artist and composer Heiner Goebbels, who transforms Warehouse 2 into a contemporary temple, while Warehouse 3, right next door, hosts Mystery 17 Melina, the exhibition dedicated to the legendary Melina Mercouri, under the general supervision of Manuella Pavlidou and the general curatorship and museological and museographic study of Nikolaos Kaltsas.
