Ancient Corinth

INFO

The  Ministry of Culture is advancing the strategic planning for the promotion of Ancient Corinth with the study of improving the access and readability of the major archaeological site, as well as its integration  with the other archaeological cores of the city. The upgrade of the overall tour of the archaeological site of Ancient Corinth and its functional connection with the settlement is combined with the improvement of the services provided to visitors with new service areas.

As the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni stated, “The protection and overall promotion of Ancient Corinth, through a modern and coherent consideration of the monuments in connection with the present of the city, is a strategic goal of the Ministry of Culture. In accordance with the final directions we gave, in December 2022, in a broad meeting, with the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the American School of Classical Studies of Athens and the relevant Municipality, the Central Archaeological Council gave a positive opinion on the study to improve the access and readability of the archaeological area of Ancient Corinth, as well as to upgrade the services provided to visitors, by creating basic infrastructure in existing buildings within the archaeological site. According to the schedule we set at the meeting on July 31st – with the participation of the competent services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the American School and the Municipality – our goal is to have completed all the studies by the end of the year – building studies, protection studies, highlighting the Southern Stoa, the Old Museum and the Arena – so that we can utilize the financial tools of the next financial period. Through the prioritization of the monumental cores, the unification of the archaeological sites, the connection of the scattered monuments and the improvement of their accessibility, we seek to strengthen the visitation to the core of the archaeological site, but also to create new poles of cultural interest within it, contributing in upgrading the experience of the visitor, but also the connection of the archaeological site with the local society and economy”.
