INFO

The Ministry of Culture  has completed the strategic study of the landscaping of the buildings classified as monuments of the E.V.M.E. S.A. Industrial Complex (formerly Tsaousoglou), in the context of the restoration and promotion of the industrial complex, following its direct purchase by the Ministry of Culture. The buildings are typical examples of large-scale industrial constructions, with a simple aesthetic, as required by the standards of the second half of the 20th century, using reinforced concrete for the load-bearing elements and the required electromechanical installations (electricity, elevators). The buildings are intended to accommodate cultural uses.

The industrial complex at 260 Pireos Street falls within the boundaries of the Municipalities of Tavros Moschato-Renti. On the plot of land at 260 Pireos Street, with an area of 28.286 sq.m., there are ten functional independent buildings, with a total building area of 26.997 sq.m. Some of them have been granted for use to the ODAP and to the HELLENIC FESTIVAL, which uses parts of the premises as theatre tents with the necessary auxiliary facilities.

The object of the strategic study is the design of the general layout of the external areas of the complex, the public movement (entrances, routes, accesses) and the movement of vehicles (heavy duty, service, employee cars, visitors’ cars), in order to serve the proposed uses. A discrete subject of the design is the planting of the site, water management, paving materials in accordance with the principles of landscape ecology, biodiversity, resilience and the creation of sustainable ecosystems. The aim is to preserve the industrial style of the site, with interventions that transform the old industrial facility into a modern public gathering place and cultural venue.

With the demolition of secondary buildings and the opening of passages in existing buildings, a network of movements and views is created both within the industrial complex and in its relationship with the city. The free space between the buildings gives the impression of being occupied by nature, with tree planting and shrubs and bushes covering a total area of more than 2000 m2 . The result is a kind of park with localised dense and sparse vegetation, capable of hosting a variety of events.

The green intervention is completed with the creation of a three-dimensional/vertical garden with climbing plants, which utilises the load-bearing structure of the industrial shell. The existing industrial outdoor space retains its character, while at the same time, through the use of natural, simple materials, it is transformed into a meeting and event venue. The aim is to make the complex energy independent through the use of solar and geothermal energy and its energy certification as “green”.
