Zoumboulakis Galleries| Voula Karampatzaki- Structures| 12 September-05 October 2024 ΑΤΗΕNS INFO Zoumboulakis Galleries presents the exhibition of Voula Karampatzaki entitled “Structures“, from 12 September to 5 October 2024. This is her first solo exhibition at the gallery. She will present her installation consisting of sculptures, paper constructions of various sizes and wall pieces. The installation includes works that seem timeless and scattered in a non-place. Her buildings started in a “spontaneous and instinctive” way. But then the connection between human construction and one of the most basic human needs, the need for protection, was identified. The buildings protect him from man himself, from nature, but they also protect nature (artificial lakes, dry stone walls), plants, animals and his gods. At the same time, through her works, Karampatzaki also highlights her wider concerns. How traditional and folk arts evolve, what is the place of manual labour today, what changes are taking place due to artificial intelligence, what is the interaction of architecture with the natural environment, myths and religions, the aesthetic value of matter, collective memory – but above all, as she herself writes, “how all these unconsciously function as occasions for the discovery of our deeper self and our relationship with the world”. The artist’s buildings (temples, altars, monasteries, lighthouses, columns, etc.) are in a constantly changing state that seems to lead sometimes to decay and sometimes to their erection. The use of two kinds of cardboard becomes the vocabulary with which Karampatzaki articulates her above concerns. Matter is transmuted into something sacred-metaphysical. A Short Bio: Born in Crete, Voula Karampatzaki is an artist who shapes her work by conversing with contemporary reality and tradition. She lives and works in Athens.
