Conference entitled ” How we become citizens. From citizenship to statehood ” at EMST on February 11

ΑΤΗΕNS

INFO

EMST as part of its public program organizes the workshop “how we become fellow citizens. From citizenship to statehood” and returns to the themes that have occupied recent and current central statecraft exhibitions. Forming the state, 2022, and Modern Love. Love in the years of cold intimacy, 2023. By discussing issues such as memory and identity, the city and civil rights, intersectionality, recognition and Political Participation, The Workshop wants within EMST to push us to reflect on “how we become fellow citizens”.

The question of citizenship is often spoken of in the public sphere in the narrow sense of state recognition and legitimacy (i.e. the granting of “citizenship”). We rarely approach citizenship with the modern, broader and inclusive connotations of citizenship in the social space, which is a performative, open and dynamic process.

Focusing on the Greek experience of recent years, the workshop develops around three key concepts: Space / City, community and memory. Our aim is to discuss aspects of citizenship and see how they intersect: grassroots movements fighting for social inclusion and the dispute over national borders and the status of migrants and refugees; the concept of citizenship in the era of big data and demands for equal access to public health; gender and sexual identity movements; new ways of understanding social cohesion and the city as a place to reclaim memory; archives of personal and social memory.
