Karpenisi is the capital of the prefecture of Evritania. It is a mountainous prefecture of great natural beauty with many dense forests of fir and chestnut trees and running waters. 85% of the prefecture is covered by forests and woodlands. The population of the county is about 25,000 people.

Karpenisi is located at an altitude of 975 meters, in the shadow of Mount Tymphristos (Velouchi). It is the only urban center of the prefecture, an economic and commercial center with about 10,000 inhabitants.

In winter, the scenery of Karpenisi is "alpine-like" with its snowy white landscape. However, winters are mild thanks to the morphology of the town. Summer in Evritania is cool and pleasant with temperatures not exceeding 28 degrees. Karpenisi is famous for its healthy climate and clean atmosphere

The economy of the region is traditionally based on livestock farming, logging, and beekeeping. For more than a decade (1986-1997) the woodworking factory of DAVIE operated in Karpenisi. For about twenty years a factory of PiraikiPatraiki operated in Karpenisi, which was closed in 1998.

In recent years, Evrytania has invested in alternative, mild tourism since nature, the morphology of the terrain, and the sights favor a variety of sports and outdoor activities in its green forests and beautiful mountains. There are excellent conditions for the continued development of agrotourism, religious tourism, ecotourism, sports tourism, wellness tourism, etc.

In Evritania there are modern luxury hotels with hospitality facilities throughout the year.

Infrastructures

Hospital

The Hospital is located in the center of Karpenisi and is under the supervision of the Karpenisi Mental Health Centre. It has 59 developed beds and is on call daily. Karpenisi Conference and Cultural Centre

It is a modern building that has hosted dozens of conferences and performances that have been held in its luxurious 600-person main hall.

It is audio and video systems are state-of-the-art, while the foyer has specially designed exhibition areas.

University

Karpenisi is home to the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment Management, which has been operating since 2019 and belongs to the Agricultural University of Athens. The natural environment of Evritania was considered an ideal place for students to practice and study forestry and natural environment issues.

The buildings of the department are located in the city center and have the necessary infrastructure, laboratories, classrooms, and a library.

Sports

Thousands of visitors every year choose Evritania for the possibilities of hiking, cycling, mountaineering, rafting, climbing, and motorsports that it offers.

Karpenisi Sports Training Center

Its geographical location with an altitude of about 900m, the pure oxygen, the climatic conditions that prevail during the summer period and the modern facilities make it one of the most complete sports preparation centres of our country which can be compared with its European counterparts of high level.

Velouchi Ski Centre

Just 12 km from Karpenisi is the Velouchi Ski Centre which has 18 pistes of varying difficulty and of course all the necessary infrastructure for visitors.

Municipal Swimming Pool

Closed heated swimming pools. It remains open throughout the year.

It has a swimming pool with 10 25-meter lanes and another small auxiliary pool, as well as changing rooms, gym areas, and stands for 1000 people.

Culture

Public Central Library

The Public Central Library has more than 13,000 volumes as well as digitized material. Its collection includes both literary and scientific books and has a rich collection of publications of local interest that are constantly being enriched. The library also has a children's section with a collection of literary and school books, school supplies, and internet access.

Chess lessons are also held in the library by the Chess Club of Karpenisi.

Museums

Centre for the History of Culture of Evritania

An original interactive museum in Karpenisi presents the history and culture of Evritania experientially. At the same time, educational programs are implemented and the visitor gets to know the history of the region, from antiquity to modern times.

Museum of National Resistance of Koryshades

The historic, stone-built, preserved monument once served as a school. It went down in history when in May 1944 the Political Committee for National Liberation, the so-called Government of the Mountains, held the first National Assembly for the National Resistance.

Museum of the Mountain of Karpenisi

Housed in a stone building, it was made possible thanks to the donations of friends and athletes who have excelled in mountaineering and other mountain activities. Here the visitor will learn the history of mountaineering and skiing. A special exhibit is the objects from the first Greek Expedition that conquered the highest peak of the world.

Celebrations of the Forest

The Forest Festivals take place in the summer in the Municipality of Karpenisi. A month full of cultural activities, theatre, music, traditional dances, book presentations, gastronomy nights, sports events, etc. for visitors and residents of Karpenisi, young and old. The celebrations are carried out with the contribution of the many cultural associations active in the area.
